Hiring a moving company to lend a hand with a relocation effort can save you a lot of trouble. There are, however, some questions you'll want to ask before you pick one.
Where Do They Help Customers Move?
Every mover has a limit to how far they'll help a customer relocate. In dense urban areas, it's not unusual for movers to only handle jobs within their metro. Most companies, though, at least offer statewide moving services. Anything bigger than that, such as national or even international moves, is likely to be specialized and expensive. Before you sign up with a moving company, make sure everyone is on the same page about just how far a move can be done.
Types of Moves
The majority of firms offer residential moving services, but other types of work may be more specialized. If you're looking for commercial moving services, it's worth taking a moment to learn exactly what the company helps with. For example, do they only handle office moves, or are they comfortable dealing with relocating retail stores, equipment, warehouses, or other types of businesses? What you mean by commercial and what they mean may be different so give them a clear description of what will need to be relocated.
Assistance and Packaging
What sort of assistance is offered can be variable, too. For one moving company, assistance may not be much more than giving you a hand truck.
Many companies, however, have built business models around doing the packing work for their customers and selling packaging materials. Try to think about the most difficult objects you'll need to move, and then ask your questions about assistance based on those items. It's also a good idea to ask if these are options or if they're included with the price for the day.
As is the case with every business that makes its equipment available to customers, folks in the moving industry want to get jobs rolling quickly. That means maintaining a tight schedule. If you live in a region where the weather can vary, it's wise to ask what the conditions are for calling off a work day and how rescheduling is handled. In particular, you want to know what the fate of any deposits you make might be.
